Mid Term Reflection

Hi Class! Our journey has reached the midpoint. We must be having fun because the time is flying by! Please post a reflection on the first half of the season. Share your raves (great things), rants (things you would like improved) and reviews (reminders, predictions and general thoughts). Your post is expected before January 31, 2013.

I think it was a great school year so far and I hope it stays like that… hope to have more and more team sports and more PE games. I would like to improve on having the team sports and how all the adults make the plans… i think some kids should make plans because they could be better. No offence Mr.Bell. I think that this year will be one of the best years I’ve had so far. I hope to have more science experiments and free days. (fun days). 😛

    • Mr. Bell says:

Thanks for your comments Shace! I will never take offence to feedback that tries to improve things. How would you plan a school day that meets the needs of students in relation to what they are expected to study?

  2. Dylan says:

this year has been good and lots of FUN its sad that we have to leave for grad 8 soon but still is the best school year ever with all the stuff MR Bell had planed for us. so its been the best hafe of the year yet for me so far and i hope it keeps on getting better.

    • Mr. Bell says:

Thanks for you kind comments Dylan. Hopefully the rest of the year gets better and better. We must all do our part to make this happen!

  3. Kelsey says:

This is probably my best year so far because of all the stuff we do is fun and a challenge.
I think the one thing we should do is to do more activities on the smart board because kids never get to use the smart board so it would make them more engaged in learning. The one thing I thought was really cool was Innovation day. The most entertaining thing we did during Innovation day was probably when we shared all of our neat ideas and we got the whole day to share and make our ideas come to life. Another thing I really enjoy is the tables because you can be engaged with your work and share with others.

    • Mr. Bell says:

Thank you for your feedback Kelsey! I agree that the students need to be more involved with the Smart Board activities – this is something we’ve tried with the fraction problems last week, and the French story in the Library, and I plan to do more. Innovation Day was fun! I hope to build on it later this year (stay tuned).

  4. Jillian says:

The first half of the school year was great! This was the first year I had tables since kindergarten, and they are nice to work on. Also the P.E. tournaments are fun, and they make you talk to people who you wouldn’t normally talk to. I hope that we have a field trip soon (other than skating), something we could vote on maybe, you could make a list of the places we could go and then let us vote! Overall, this year has been fantastic!!!!!

    • Mr. Bell says:

Thanks for your comments Jillian! Field trips can be tricky to put together. The considerations for trips include cost, participation rates, and links to curriculum. Skating is nice because it is free, within walking distance, most people have skates or can easily borrow them, and it is great physical activity. This year has been disheartening given the amount of students with ‘acute skate-itis’ on skating days.

  5. melissa says:

My opinion is that the school year has been spontaneous it has been the best year i’ve had and well i think that the P.E. has been fun and that Math has been hard but the group activities have been nice i think you should tone it done on the Raves Rants and reviews. Yellow slips have been coming in like crazy and i think the whole class should work on that and we can work on listening to instructions and following orders. This school year is going to be bright and fun.
    -Melissa-

    • Mr. Bell says:

Thanks for your adjective-enhanced feedback, though I am not sure what you mean by ‘spontaneous’. It is wonderful to hear you are enjoying the year. Liking school is an important component of being successful in school. What aspect of R-R-R needs fixing?

      • melissa says:

well your reviews could be nicer and your raves could be less harsh and take your time on writing them and not speaking them out to the class when we are in trouble it just takes up to much time and im not sure what wants are so ya
        -Melissa-

    • Jillian & Shaleyea says:

Shaleyea and I both are wondering with Mr. Bell, what you are meaning by spontaneous. From what Shaleyea said, it is a word to describe a person or thing with the ability to solve problems, and do things very quickly.

      • Mr. Bell says:

I was intrigued by Melissa’s spontaneous use of the word ‘spontaneous’ in her post. My understanding is that spontaneous means ‘in the moment without taking time to reflect or think’.

  6. sydney says:

This is my first year with a boy teacher and it is so much fun. Getting to know all my peers and the tables encourage talk and excitement. All though some times people ruin it like there talking to each other and everybody has to switch tables. I think that we could do daily 5 because most kids lose there spelling sheets and don’t know where they are and don’t do them this way you can see that they are doing something. The other thing i like is the smart board it is my first year with smart board and it is a whole different learning engagement. That is what I enjoy and dislike.

    • Mr. Bell says:

Thanks for your comments Sydney. I am glad you are enjoying the table talk – it is an important skill to develop. The Daily 5 is terrific, and I try to incorporate some of the activities elsewhere (such as the reading reflections).

  7. JaXs0N says:

I think it’s good so far but but I am really enjoying chemistry because I like learning about all the different things you can do. My rants are I am getting bored of Mathletics.

    • Mr. Bell says:

Thanks for your comments Jaxson. I agree, chemistry is an amazing subject. You’ll get to choose it in high school if your are interested and perform many amazing experiments/labs.

What bores you about Mathletics – too easy, too hard, the format?

  8. Gabrielle says:

It has been a terrific school year so far! I love it when we get to talk and use the smart board more than write on paper. During silent reading I enjoy doing a reading reflection on the computer, it is a lot faster for me. Also it is more enjoyable to read. Math gets boring sometimes because it is everyday of the week. Thats probably why it is my least favourite subject. A lot of people seem like they want dances! They’re a lot of fun. If you sell drinks and food there also you can raise money for the school. I hope we get to do a lot of science experiments they are fun!

    – Gabrielle B. 🙂

    • Mr. Bell says:

Great feedback Gabby – thanks! We will be dancing in PE soon, so hopefully the class will show that they want to dance! How would you make Math more enjoyable? (You cannot suggest to stop doing Math either.)

  9. Kobe says:

It was a good start of the year because we played alot of running sports and what. I would like to improve my spelling because i barley get to work on it so thats what i would like to improve on. The only thing i don’t like is the H.C because it is really boring at times the reason why i don’t like is because it just talks about is how to deal withy that is mot natural.

    • Mr. Bell says:

Thanks for sharing your comments Kobe. I loved the ultimate frisbee unit at the start of the year, it was wonderful to see most of the students playing their best! When you say you barely get to work on spelling, are you talking about working at home or in class or both? Be sure to use your time wisely in class if you are finding it difficult to work elsewhere. In HCED, besides talking about the things that are stressful and challenging to deal with, what should we do? It is unwise to ignore our problems and foolish to act out violently…what then?

  10. serena says:

It has been a pretty good year so far I like how we have gym every day but I wish we had fine arts more often then just on Friday. I think we should do more interesting projects then just drawing we should do ones that are not so easy. I also don’t like how we have to do math everyday for usually an hour. We should also have more days like Innovation day because we got to be creative but all in all it has been a pretty good school year so far.

    • Mr. Bell says:

Thanks for your comments Serena. Do you have any ideas to combine Fine Arts and Math? What would be a challenging activity that combines fractions and art? There are some more challenging art activities coming soon!

  11. Jake says:

I generally enjoyed this year. It was a admirable year because of the exquisite staff amd the befitting students

    • Jake says:

      • Mr. Bell says:

Jake, let me convey my gratitude for your eloquently worded dissemination of reactions! I hope the remainder of the year is great too!

  12. Issac says:

I really liked the first part of the Term. There wasn’t anything to really complain about I really liked the tables instead of the desks. The work pretty easy. The people were nice and there was nothing wrong with this term.

    • Mr. Bell says:

Your comments are great to read Issac! Because you have no complaints, why not share what we can do to make a good thing even better?

  13. cassie says:

I like this school year it is cool. I like the games in P.E I really liked alt-emit Frisbee. Now that was fun. This school year is awesome It was fun when we got to have a fun day and we were the stations that was fun I wish we could have one in the winter. That would be fun in the last bit of snow. I liked girls group that is so much fun. Plus we get to do crafts and other stuff its awesome. I liked choir too I like it. Its fun singing and singing new songs all the time.

    • Mr. Bell says:

Great comments Cassie, thank you! Now what are some ways to combine the fun of the special days with the fun of learning (in Math, Science, English…)?

  14. kayla says:

I think it has bin A great school year so far. I would like to do more art and do experiments in science.. W hat I liked about this year is P.E and playing three on three.
I liked the crafts and stuff we do in girls group too. I also liked choir it’s fun.
    I don’t know what els.

  15. emily! says:

This year has definitely been interesting and peachy! I think that I have learned some new stuff. I like school. But there is one things that I could only wish to change in the class room. MORE… Du Du DA… DoODLinG! Yes if only Mr. Bell could just give the class just a little bit of free time to just to sketch and have just a tiny bit of free time. But I am physic… YOU! Mr.bell would just say “Well if you just did your work you would have free time and “doodle”… as you kids say these days.” Ya ya ya and I don’t think that it would kill anybody to just to give us at least 30 min. of doing what ever, if it is appropriate, unless you have free itis then you have a problem. respond to me if you like this.

    • Mr. Bell says:

Thanks for your psychic feedback Emily! Doodling is fun and helpful. The skill is to balance other tasks when doodling (rather than letting the doodles take over). Just out of curiosity, how much non-school time do you spend doodling?

  16. Shaleyea says:

The year so far has been astonishing! I have made numerous friends, and bonded closer with others. I am also very fond of the table groups you have set up. Although I would like more “random” group set-ups, because I would be mixed in with people I wouldn’t talk to on a daily bases. I like how we do a physical activity everyday of the week and the games we play within the activity. Altogether, the year has been one of the best years yet!

    • Mr. Bell says:

Your comments are wonderful to hear Shaleyea, thank you. I am pondering some random groups now and then to mix things up. Perhaps we will give it a try today!

      Quick Fix:
      – daily basis (not bases)

  17. jada says:

This year has been great so far. I think the math is a bit to hard and I would like to do more art. We also do math near the end of the day when we are all tired. I think we could do math in the morning. I like that we have gym every day and the stuff we do in girls group every Wednesday. Maybe when all the snow melts, the class could go outside for gym.

    • Mr. Bell says:

Thanks for your suggestions Jada. I often wonder what the best time of the day is for certain subjects. I like the physical activity in the morning because it wakes everyone up! Math is a tricky subject because it depends on prior knowledge (like the quick recall of multiplication facts). Like you, I am looking forward to the snow melting so we can do more PE outside.

  18. spencer says:

This year has been a great year so far with all of the stuff we’ve learned like chemistry and all of the stuff in gym. I don’t really have any rants that I can think of at the moment. A reviews I have is when we made the cool glass art thing. This year is just flying by and I think it’ll just get better.

    • Mr. Bell says:

Thanks for your kind words Spencer. It is great to hear you are enjoying the year and that it is flying by – it will be June in no time!

  19. rayne :D says:

This school year has been great so far, and I would like to improve on lots of things. Like Math, Science and Fine Arts, because it seems like every assignment I don’t get it in on time and I know it’s because of me, but it is basically because it is really boring. The ways that Science won’t be so boring is that we can do more science experiments, and activities. Math is one of my favourite subjects, it is always so interesting with all of the different ways to do a problem, but I’m not the best at math. I hope we do the same amount of math though. Fine Arts is pretty fun, but I don’t enjoy it sometimes because there is too much colouring and I know colouring is the whole point of Fine Arts: so I guess I don’t really enjoy it. I have shared my rants, raves and reviews…….I think. ‘Til next time!

    • Mr. Bell says:

Great feedback Rayne, thank you! Hopefully we will get to more ‘hands on’ science in the weeks to come. From my perspective, if the students can demonstrate the expected behaviours for science demonstrations, we will do more of them. When we have to wait for a handful of people who do not want to join in (in an expected manner), it is difficult to do the hands on activities.
