Hi Class! Today you are charged with the challenge to locate videos related to the Earth’s Crust and Plate Techtonics. Your goal is to identify videos that help students your age understand the big ideas and vocabulary. Here are the key terms:
crust, mantle, outer core, inner core, weathering, erosion, deposition, fossil, fossil record, geologic time scale, rock cycle, plate tectonics, continental crust, mid-ocean ridge, delta, mountain, valley, volcano, plain, plateau, ocean crust, convergent, divergent, transform plate boundaries, subduction zone, igneous, metamorphic, sedimentary, magma, lava, seismic waves
Merely posting the URL (web address) for your video is not enough. Explain to your classmates why the link you provide is helpful to you in relation to this unit of study. In other words, talk about what you have a better understanding of after watching your video.
Your links are due October 9, 2013.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OinfMLdornU This is a fun video about the earth! It is very informative too! 😀
Share with us Gurisha some of the fun and informative things you learnt from this video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcPghqnnTVk Here is another, FUNNY video about the earth!
Great Gurisha! What did you learn from this video?
I learned that the earth only moves 1 or 2 centimeters per year.
I also learned that the earths crust is only about 1% of Earth’s capacity
Good details Gurisha! It’s amazing to think that our fingernails grow faster than the plates move.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OinfMLdornU
Thanks Sydney! Now share what you know from watching this video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_tvWDPBNiD4 i think this video helped me understand how the earth transformed into what it is now
Thanks Austin! Can you tell your classmates what causes this transformation?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryrXAGY1dmE This video is good because it shows how the plates move
Thanks TJ! Can you explain what is causing these plates to move?
I admire this video because it shows you how the earth separated further it shows many of the words we are talking about.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28GNJsXp6Mk. Go on utube and search plate tectonics and go on the activities.
Thanks for sharing! What information did you gain from this video Trey?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YPLsogIPTw0 This video is good because it shows pangaea’s plates moving over the years
How quickly/slowly are these plates moving TJ?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGcDed4xVD4
It helps you learn what happened to the plates and how earth is the way it is today. It tells you how it happened and it shows the earth from a really long time ago.
Thanks Serena! What new information can you share and explain because of this video?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryrXAGY1dmE
This video is great because it shows what’s going on in the earth and how lava is created how volcanoes work are created and erupt. It also shows how earth shakes and tsunamis happen.
Thanks Brendan! Could you explain what causes a volcano to erupt?

What is the new knowledge you gained from this video Trey?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcPghqnnTVk This video is great because it uses a lot of words Mr.Bell is looking for. It looks like it is for little kids but it’s good for our ages. I didn’t have headphones and I could still understand it a bit.
What words can you now explain? Let us know what you learn from it after you listen to it – thanks Gabby!
I learned how mountains are formed. I learned that the tectonic plates olny move a few cm a YEAR!
Good to hear Gabby…Do all mountains form in the same way?
http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=650+million+years+in+under+2+minutes&oq=650+million+years+in+under+2+minutes&gs_l=youtube.3..0.100874.119706.0.120099.36.8.0.28.28.0.415.1542.0j7j4-1.8.0…0.0…1ac.1.11.youtube.FCYUOhQkUpo
I think this video helped me understand how the earth moved and how it will move in the future
Thanks for sharing Austin! Could you explain in your own words how the earth moved?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OinfMLdornU
I think is a good one because it shows the continents before they departed and become North America, Africa, Asia, South America, Europe, Antarctica and Australia. the web site also shows earth’s inner crust, outer crust, the mantel and core. Furthermore the video shows little pictures of volcanoes and splits in the earth. I think this video on Earth’s crust and Plate Tectonics is very useful because some kids here the words but the idea does not stick in their heads but with videos the see the images and get an idea of what is going on.
Thanks for the link Alexa! Great use of the transition ‘furthermore’!
What new ideas or terms do you understand because of this video?
Quick Fix:
– We use our ‘ear’ to ‘hear’. (some kids hear the word…)
hear
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tzt_EBD3DDQ I like this video because it shows how mountains are made
:]
Thanks TJ! What key words were mentioned in the video? Can you explain how mountains form? Are all mountains formed the same way?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGcDed4xVD4 Is my video. This video describes how the earth was formed in Pangaea and in 100 Million years how our earths surface will look.
Thanks Sam! What new knowledge did you learn? Were any of the key words used?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAHY6965o08 This video is a yummy way to learn about the layers of the earth for our ages.
I love the idea of ‘yummy learning’! What would your ideal crust/mantle/core cake be?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cm5giPd5Uro
It shows how the plates are separating and the different scientific names for all the different stages. It als0o tells you how many years ago it was and then it shows you present day.
Thanks Serena! What stage are we currently in?
So far I’ve only found one good video and it’s about Plate Tectonics, I like the video because it’s short and is the person explained things quickly and easily. Here’s the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryrXAGY1dmE
Thanks Asia. What are some big ideas you discovered because of this video?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_iUfi8XqEos
I think that this video is great for learning Earth’s inner core, outer core, mantel and crust. The image lights up which shows each part of the Earth’s inside correctly and the picture also has a diagram that points at each part. The video is made by the same producer that made the first video I posted. Before when I read the article I had a good understanding of what is happening but know that I watched the video I have a great or better understanding.
You’re right, Alexa, when we acquire information through several means (text, video, audio), our understanding improves. No wonder why we do so many table talks in class!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfziy_860GU
This video is a great one for kids around my age because it has a bunch of explaining in it for example it it has big bold print explaining what he is talking about. I understand the term plate tectonics better because it helped by seeing the plates collide and forming mountains and plate boundary.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryrXAGY1dmE
This video is really interesting towards tectonic plates. It explains how volcanoes work and what happens when the plates collide.
Well said Matthew! Thanks for sharing the link. What causes plates to move?
The plates move because hot rock rises heated by the earths core and it moves the plates.
Thanks Matthew. Where could you use the word ‘molten’ in your response.
Quick Fix:
– the core belonging to Earth = Earth’s core
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Z4as_imJfM
It shows what volcanoes do and how they are made. It shows the earth with the volcanoes.
Good stuff Serena. If you had to explain volcano formation to preschoolers, what would you say?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xs4yNL1M8Gg This video has a little bit of everything at the beginning. If you wanna know about the ring of fire this video is for you. This video is about mainly volcanoes and other natural disasters.
Thanks Gabby! I want to know what you learnt about the ring of fire. (not wanna)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OinfMLdornU
This video was useful to me because it’s a very quick simple video thats easy to be understood. It showed me how the earth looked before Pangaea was separated into Asia, Africa ,Europe, Antarctica, Australia, North America, and South America. additionally it showed me simple diagrams that I was able to understand very clearly. After watching this video I have a better understanding of the continental drift, where the plates were separated, how deep the core is in the earth, and how the contents were formed.
Thanks Kiira! How fast are the plates drifting?
The plates are drifting Between 2.5 and 15 cm a year.
Thanks Kiira! It’s amazing that such slow movement can cause massive disasters such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JrBaiPN6AW8&feature=c4-overview&list=UUWxJwdNjOFOUvKAhsYo41lg
the videos are all about the world and about the core
Thanks Tyler. Now share what you gained from the videos.
wwwyoutube.com/watch?v=_5q8hzF9VVE
Continental Drift created by Michael Sammartano.
It explains how the continents drifted apart to form our continents and there is a very serous yet funny presenter.
Thanks Madison! What are some of the ideas and words you now know because of this video?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfziy_860GU
I liked this video because it was interesting of how the lava
comes out of the volcano. IT was cool to learn to how the core works
and the plates and how they collided together. Plate boundries,
convergent boundary, and subduction.
Good stuff Beau! Could you explain, in your own words, how the core works?
The magnetic field is created when the liquid outer
core spins, and the spinning action creates the magnetic
field. The inner core is made up mostly iron. The
outer core is 2080 km (1,300 mi) thick.
Thanks Beau! Have you heard about magnetic north vs true north? Click here.
I found a video that I think would be good for us because it shows where all the layers of
earth is. I you tubed inside the earth and it was the second video down the column.
Thanks Seth! What new knowledge did you make from this video?
I found out how thick the crust, the mantle, the outer core, and the inner core is.
Great! Which is the thinnest?
The crust is the thinnest.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eV0Rl0gKiSI
This is the link.
http://youtu.be/OinfMLdornU
I think this video is good to learn about inner core, outer core, mantle, pangea and the continents. I like this video because it makes you want to watch more, it is interesting and it is easy to understand. After I watch this video I think I understand more about how the plates moved the continents, the inner core, outer core and pangea.
Thanks Sarah – could you explain (using your words) what causes the plates to move?
The plates are moving because of the flow of magma beneath the earth’s crust’s surface.
Great piece of information Sarah! The molten rock rises when it’s hot and sinks when it cools.
This video is really interesting, it explains who made up the theory of Pangaea.
It also shows how all the continents are puzzle pieces. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5q8hzF9VVE this is the link.
Thanks Sam! Do you think there will be a second version of Pangaea as the plates continue to move?
The first video you showed of mine teaches teachers what activities you can do with your class to help them understand.
Do you think the plate puzzle activity would help students understand about continental drift?
I understand more about the inside of the earth and how the plats separated and made earth!!!!!! I think the videos are more useful because you can read about it and understand like one third of it or you can watch and understand at lest one half.
Thanks Alexa! The videos certainly help deepen our understanding; it’s nice to have moving pictures to explain moving plates.
Continents Adrift An Introduction to Continental Drift and Plate Tectonics I do not know if the link will work though I put it up anyway this video is pretty imformative I think that it could be used for classes who need to know stuff like that.
Thanks Garet! What are some of the informative things you took away from the video? Once you find the link or address, could you please add it to your post?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXTEWQdu3aE
What I learned about this video is the outer core is
made up of a hot liqiud iron and the inner core made up
of a solid nickel and iron. The inner core is rotating
in a easterly direction and the outer is moving in
westerly direction this creates our magnetic field.
Excellent details Beau – It’s great to have you explain the cause of Earth’s magnetic field for the class!
